NUTRITION & DIET
The order you eat your food matters
Eat the same meal in a different order, and your blood sugar rises less. Here is how.
5 MIN · FOR EVERYONE
What the research shows
In a study of 16 healthy adults, eating vegetables and protein before the carbs led to a smaller rise in blood sugar after the meal, with more of a gut hormone that steadies appetite and no extra insulin.
It is one small study, so treat this as a low-cost habit worth trying, not a cure.
Why the order works
When carbs hit your gut first, the sugar floods in quickly. When fiber and protein go first, they form a kind of buffer, so the same carbs are released more slowly.
The effect is bigger for people whose blood sugar runs high, and smaller for everyone else. Either way, it is free and easy to try.
Meals where the order is easy to change:
a salad or vegetables with a rice or pasta dish
soup before a bread-heavy main
vegetables and meat before potatoes
fruit after a meal rather than before
Try the order at one meal
1Pick one meal with clear carbs, like rice, pasta, bread, or potatoes.
2Eat the vegetables first, then the protein.
3Leave the carbs until last, and eat them slowly.
4Notice how you feel in the hour after, and repeat at that meal for a week.

Eat your carbs last
The order of a meal changes how fast your blood sugar rises, at no cost and with no change to what you eat. Start with vegetables and protein, and leave the carbs for last.
That’s the course.
Mark it complete and it’ll show in My Progress.
